In 1986 the Grand Canyon River Rapids were installed at Alton Towers, the large scale project saw a big investment for Alton Towers, over 10 acres of land and thousands of tons of rock were excavated to bring a brand new water ride to Alton Towers. For years the entrance to the ride was in Aqua Land, but in 1992 when the Runaway mine train was installed a new area was opened up in the middle of the Rapids and Katanga Canyon was born.
On warm days the queue for this ride can reach anything up to 2 hours, after queuing you board the boats on a revolving platform and once on the ride the boats travel along water filled channels. Logs underneath the surface of the water produce fast rapids, bumps and waves in the water. The boat moves from one side of the channel to the other, bumping into the sides and producing waves on its travels. Special features include waterfalls, fountains and even the opportunity to get your photograph taken whilst on board.
